General and Addiction Psychiatry

Laurence M. Westreich, M.D. is a board-certified psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of patients dually diagnosed with addiction and other mental disorders.

After graduating from Northwestern University with a degree in English Literature, he received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. After an internship in Internal Medicine at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr. Westreich completed a residency in General Psychiatry at New York’s Beth Israel Medical Center, and a fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at the New York University School of Medicine/Bellevue Hospital.

He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry. Dr. Westreich is Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine, and serves as the consultant on behavioral health and addiction to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, and is Past President of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. He formerly worked as the Director of Bellevue Hospital’s Detoxification Unit and Dual Diagnosis Unit.

Dr. Westreich is the author of Helping the Addict You Love, A Parent’s Guide to Teen Addiction: Professional Advice on Signs, Symptoms, What to Say, and How to Help and the co-author of Addiction and the Law with Dr. Elie G. Aoun and Dr. Debra A. Pinals.
